OUPV Captain Diver Joe Plotino VA Statement
on Pending Bottom Fishing Closure

As a proud Virginia resident and passionate advocate for recreational fishing, I am deeply concerned about the current state of bottom fishing regulations, which unfairly limit access to our shared natural resources. While conservation remains an essential priority, these overly restrictive policies disproportionately target responsible anglers—those who diligently follow the rules, respect the environment, and are committed to preserving the health of our marine ecosystems for future generations. Such regulations hinder the enjoyment of a beloved pastime that is not only integral to our culture but also vital to our economy.

Meanwhile, industrial-scale practices like those of the menhaden reduction fishery continue to wreak havoc on our coastal waters. These operations have caused alarming declines in key species, including striped bass, while also disrupting broader ecological balances, such as the reproductive success of ospreys. Despite their significant environmental impact, these industries often evade the level of scrutiny and accountability applied to recreational fishermen. This inequity undermines conservation efforts and diminishes opportunities for those who fish responsibly and care deeply about the environment.

Recreational fishing is more than just a hobby—it supports our local economies, fosters community traditions, and connects us to Virginia’s rich natural heritage. It is critical that policymakers address these issues with a balanced, science-based approach. By reconsidering the burdensome restrictions placed on recreational anglers and implementing stronger measures to regulate the menhaden reduction fishery, we can ensure that our marine ecosystems thrive while preserving access for responsible recreational fishing. I urge decision-makers to act swiftly and decisively to protect these vital resources for generations to come.
